A Book Review on 'KARNATAKA SANGEETHAM' .

There are so many books published    in  the  vast genre of Carnatic Music. More   than    a   method   to   culure   your   voice   and     developing   your   talent    in   singing,  learning   Carnatic   Music   is    a    Sadhana   or    a   Devotion   to  God. For   this   purpose   there    are    so   many    books    being   published   to   refer. Some    of   those   include   Karnatik  Music   Composition  by  Dr.S.Bhagyalexmi,Ragamalika   and   Jawali   by   Gowri  Kuppuswamy, etc. All   these   are    books    for    further    higher  level   studies    and     reference. For    basic    lessons    we    need   to  refer   separate    books    which    are    useful   for   those   students    who   are   the   beginners. These    books   are    the   main    building   blocks   or   firm    foundation    for   the   students. If    these    lessons   are    proper,  provided,   you   are    under   a   good   teacher,   learning    becomes    quite   easier. So   first  of   all   the  course   book   has    a  great   role   to   play. One    among   such    books   is     the    book    called   KARNATAKA   SANGEETHAM   published   by    Suvarnaraagam    publishers    and     written    by    Shri.Suresh   Narayanan.
In   this    book    Suresh   Narayanan    has   included    almost    all    the    basic    lessons    with    a     very    brief,   simple, easily    understandable   language   with     readable    letters. The    book    published   in    Malayalam   is     quite    favourite    among    the     students   through  out    Kerala, because    this   is    the    commonly   reffered    text  book    throughout    Kerala. Before,  once a   student    joins    his/her    music   classes, the    teacher    itself    would    write    and    give    the   notes    to    the   student. But    now a days,  along   with    that     this    book    is    there    with   any    music   student    to   help    him    out    for    further    reference. The    book    covers   not   only    the    basic   lessons    including   9 Primary  lessons,10 Geethams,4   Swarajathis,4Jathiswaras,20  Aadi Thaala Varnaas, and   7 Ada thala Varnaas. All    these    portions are    covered    with    complete  and  thorough    notations    along    with   the   literature.
Other    than    these    essential     notes,   Suresh    Narayanan    has     included    a    few   pages    in     the     beginning,  dispaying  the    vast   Mela Kartha  Raga  Pattika    explaining    the origin    of    all    the     Mela  kartha  Ragas (Janaka Ragas)   in    the   karnatik   music,   along    with    that,  a    few    references    about   the    Janya  Ragas, born    out    of    these    Janaka   Ragas[The    parent    Ragas   are    called    Janaka  Ragas  (72)    and    Janya  Ragas  (about   128    nd   can    exceed    in    future)   are   formed    from    these    Janaka Ragas]. Along  with   this    there   is   a    brief   table   giving   an    insight    into   the    Western  Method    of     notation    and   pitching  and   a    few    referable   portion   on    different   Thalas.
Along    with    the    above    said     technical    knowledge, Suresh   Narayanan    has    given    due    care     to     include    a     brief    history    of     the    eminent   personalities   in   Karnatik   music   inluding   Purandara   Daasar,Thyagaraja Swamikal ,Syamashasthri,Muthu Swami Deekshithar   and   Swathi Thirunaal. Some    useful   definitions    on   music   jargons   have also   been    supplemented   in   this    book.
This     book    which   costs   about  Rs.50    was    published    first   in   2001. This    book    was   highly    praised    by    Prof.Mavelikkara. R.Prabhakara Varma ,retired   Principal   of   Music  College,Thrippunithura, Ernakulam. He     has     ardently   recommended    the    usage    of    this    book    for    music   teachers   as   well   as    students. Almost    15   editions    are    over    by    now. The    only   drawback   which   some    speak   about   is    that    this    book   might    have    been   even    better    if    some   Krithis    were    also    included    in    the    book, which    it    lacks. But   still    this    book    is    a   very   good    portable   and    can    be    used    effectively   as    a    mini    dictionay   any    time    for    reference.
